arsoc-topic-selectionUse when judging whether a sociology literature is an Annual Review of Sociology (ARSoc)-scale review topic — mature, broadly important, and genuinely in need of an authoritative cross-subfield synthesis — and framing the review's animating question. Decides fit; it does not gather the literature (arsoc-literature-synthesis) or pitch the Committee (arsoc-pr…

ARSoc is the Annual Reviews sociology survey series: a yearly volume of invited, authoritative review articles that are accessible to sociologists outside the subfield, not only to its specialists. The reader is a competent sociologist — a culture scholar reading the networks review, a demographer reading the race/ethnicity review — who wants to enter, teach, or locate the open questions of an area they do not currently work in. That cross-subfield reader profile, plus the annual-volume cadence, sets the fit bar. ARSoc covers the breadth of the discipline: stratification, culture, organizations, networks, race/ethnicity, gender, family, demography, political and economic sociology, and more.
A literature belongs in ARSoc when it passes all four. If it fails one, route accordingly.
| Situation | Verdict | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Mature, broadly important, needs synthesis, fits the ARSoc envelope | ARSoc-shaped | → arsoc-proposal-and-commissioning |
| Important but immature | Not yet | revisit in a volume or two |
| Mature but narrow / specialist-only | Wrong venue | a specialty journal's review section |
| Mature, important, but exhaustive and book-length | Wrong venue | handbook chapter (deeper, longer) |
| You have original data/findings to report | Wrong venue | ASR / AJS / Sociological Science / Demography |
| A pure theoretical-development argument (not a survey of evidence) | Wrong venue | Sociological Theory |
An ARSoc review is organized by a question about the subfield, not by a topic label. Before approaching the Committee, write one sentence of each:
arsoc-proposal-and-commissioning)【Subfield】<the literature / area>
【Four tests】maturity / broad-importance / need-for-synthesis / envelope-tractable — pass or fail each
【Animating question】"What do we know about ___, and how sure are we?"
【Why now】<new evidence / method turn / policy or public salience>
【Reader payoff】<what a cross-subfield sociologist can do after reading>
【Coverage skeleton】<4–7 research lines / theoretical traditions the review must cover>
【Verdict】ARSoc-shaped / rescope / wrong-venue (→ ASR/AJS / Sociological Theory / handbook)
【Source status】verified URL / 待核实 / not asserted
【Next step】→ arsoc-proposal-and-commissioning (get the topic to the Editorial Committee)
