Child of career-coach. This skill handles every scenario where a career crosses a boundary — new employer, new role type, new function, new level, or new industry. It covers the full lifecycle from evaluating an opportunity through negotiating terms to landing successfully in the new position.

Before any offer or move, frame the macro reality: application volume is at record highs, AI-assisted mass-applying has flooded the funnel, and cold-application response rates are very low — a doom-loop where the flood drives more applications (qualitative; figures in ~/.claude/skills/career-coach/references/market-snapshot-2026-06.md). The winning strategy inverts the instinct to spray applications.
Strategy order (highest-yield first):
career-positioning §4).This order is the antidote to the flood: the first four channels route around the bottleneck that channel five is stuck in.
Deconstruct the full package before forming any opinion. Never advise accepting an offer without full package analysis.
| Component | What to check |
|---|---|
| Title / Grade | Both the functional title AND the internal banking grade. A better title with a weak bonus target can be a worse deal. |
| Base salary | Compare against corporate-ladders.md compensation bands for the grade. |
| Target bonus | Guaranteed vs discretionary? What % of base? What is realistic payout history? |
| Sign-on bonus | Cash or deferred? Clawback period? Does it bridge forfeited compensation? |
| Deferred compensation | Vesting schedule, forfeiture conditions, change-of-control provisions. |
| Equity / RSUs | Grant size, vesting schedule, refresh cadence, current valuation methodology. |
| Benefits | Pension/401k match, healthcare, life/disability insurance, perks. |
| Scope | Reporting line, team size, budget authority, span of control. |
| Flexibility | Remote/hybrid policy, travel expectations, on-call requirements. |
| Development budget | Conference attendance, training, certifications, education reimbursement. |
| Severance / Notice / Garden leave | What protection do you have if the role doesn't work out? |
Score each component 1-5 against the user's stated priorities. Weight by importance. Calculate a composite score and compare against the current role.
A 2026 addition to due diligence — read how the prospective employer treats AI, in hiring and in the work:
~/.claude/skills/career-coach/references/market-snapshot-2026-06.md)? Opaque or careless screening is a culture signal.Know your Best Alternative before ANY negotiation. Your BATNA determines your power:
| Situation | BATNA strength |
|---|---|
| Employed + happy + not looking | Strong — you can walk away |
| Employed + unhappy | Moderate — you have income but motivation to move |
| Multiple competing offers | Strongest — explicit alternatives |
| Unemployed / notice period ending | Weak — time pressure reduces leverage |
Negotiate multiple items simultaneously, not sequentially. Sequential negotiation signals that each item is a dealbreaker; simultaneous negotiation signals flexibility.
"I'm excited about this role. To make this work, I'd need adjustments in three areas: base salary to X, a sign-on bonus to bridge my forfeited deferred comp, and confirmation of the VP title at grade Y."
After stating your position, stop talking. The discomfort of silence works in your favour. Let them respond first.
| Tool | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| levels.fyi | Fintech / tech | Verified data, strong for total comp |
| Glassdoor | Bank-specific roles | Large dataset, can skew outdated |
| Blind | Current market rates | Anonymous, skews high |
| Robert Half / Hays salary guides | Regional benchmarks | Good for non-tech banking roles |
| Personal network | Most reliable | Current, contextual, specific to your market |
"There is no room to negotiate" is almost never true at VP and above.
The biggest career identity shift for senior technologists.
Your unit of value shifts from "solutions I deliver" to "team outcomes I enable." This is not an incremental change — it is a fundamental redefinition of how you create value.
Management gets clearer credit for:
Continuing to do IC work while managing. You must let go. If you're still writing production code or designing solutions, you're doing two jobs badly instead of one well.
Expect 6-12 months to feel comfortable. The transition is nonlinear — some weeks you'll feel like a natural leader, others like a fraud. This is normal.
Lateral moves often come with grade bumps that would take 2+ years through normal promotion cycles.
Banks strongly favour internal candidates for roles requiring:
Always clarify both banking grade AND functional title. Goldman VP does not equal Stripe VP. Reference corporate-ladders.md for cross-firm grade mapping.
Often 3 months + garden leave. Factor this into timing:
Common in banking. Before job searching:
Document exactly what you forfeit by leaving:
Present this to the new employer as a factual bridging requirement. New employer should match via sign-on bonus, guaranteed bonus, or accelerated equity grant.
Identify what from your current experience is valuable in the target domain. Create a two-column map:
| Current competency | Value in target domain |
|---|---|
| Regulatory fluency | Compliance-aware product design, regtech |
| Enterprise delivery at scale | Program management, transformation consulting |
| Technical depth + business context | Solutions architecture, pre-sales engineering |
| Vendor/stakeholder management | Partner management, client success |
Regulatory fluency + technical depth + enterprise delivery = highly transferable to:
Frame pivots as expansion, not departure:
"I'm not leaving banking technology — I'm applying 16 years of banking technology experience to solve the same problems from a different angle."
Map your network to the target domain:
What is the minimum you need to be credible in the target domain? Often less than you think:
When the pivot is partly defensive (your current task-mix is increasingly automatable), aim the move toward moats AI doesn't easily cross: judgment under ambiguity, regulatory/accountability ownership, and relationship/trust capital. Diagnose which of your tasks are automatable-now vs AI-augmented vs AI-resistant first (cross-ref career-assessment's AI-Exposure Assessment), then pivot toward the resistant, premium end. The banking regtech path (regulatory fluency + technical depth → regtech, model-risk, AI-governance roles) is the worked example; the general principle — move up the judgment/accountability/relationship ladder, not deeper into the automatable middle — applies in any sector.
Build a diversified career portfolio where each component reinforces the others:
| Component | Allocation | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Core role | 60-70% | Your primary employment — stable base income and identity |
| Advisory / consulting | 10-15% | Board advisory, fractional CTO, technical due diligence — builds credibility |
| Thought leadership | 10-15% | Speaking, writing, podcasts — builds reputation and inbound opportunities |
| Learning / exploration | 5-10% | Side projects, open source, certifications — keeps expertise current |
| Community | 5% | Mentoring, industry bodies, professional associations — builds network and purpose |
50-80% of people who accept counteroffers leave within 12 months anyway. The underlying issues rarely change.
| Anti-Pattern | Why It Fails | Correct Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Accepting a counteroffer without addressing root causes | 50-80% of counteroffer acceptees leave within 12 months — money rarely fixes culture, growth, or management issues | Only accept if the sole issue was compensation AND the counteroffer includes structural changes (new scope, reporting line) |
| Comparing offers on base salary alone | Banking compensation is complex — deferred comp, bonus guarantees, sign-on clawbacks, equity vesting change total value dramatically | Use full package analysis: base + guaranteed bonus + expected variable + equity + benefits + pension + notice period value |
| Resigning before unvested compensation vests | Leaving 2 weeks before bonus payment or equity cliff costs tens of thousands in forfeited compensation | Map all vesting dates and bonus payment windows; time resignation to minimize forfeiture |
| Treating IC-to-manager transition as a promotion | It is a career change — different competencies, different success metrics, different daily work | Assess management fit separately: do you want to coach, hire, shield, and translate — or build and solve? |
| Starting a new role without a 90-day plan | Drifting through onboarding means missing the window when people expect you to ask questions and shape your role | Create a structured 30/60/90-day plan with learning goals, relationship targets, and early wins |
| Volume job search (spray-and-pray cold applications) | Under the application flood, cold-apply response rates are very low — mass-applying mostly adds to the doom-loop | Invert the order (§0): referrals → direct outreach → apply early → staffing-firm pre-verification → cold-apply last |
